Mission: To train family medicine physicians centered on the principles of collaboration, compassion, and accountability and improve the health and well-being of rural and underserved communities.
We believe that physicians practicing in these communities have an incredible opportunity to make a big impact by improving access to care, strengthening local health systems, and building lasting relationships with the patients they serve.
The Samaritan Family Medicine Rural Training Program (RTP) is a community-based, ACGME-accredited, 3 year Early Immersion Rural Training Program located on the beautiful central Oregon coast.
With the first 6 months of foundational training spent at the sponsoring institution before spending 2.5 years in rural Newport, Oregon, this program provides a unique, enhanced and integrated rural training experience in a resource-limited environment. The initial 6 months is spent at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, a level 2 trauma center in Corvallis, Oregon. Residents then transition to Newport half-way through intern year and spend the rest of their training at Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital (SPCH), a critical access hospital that overlooks the Pacific Ocean and beautiful Yaquina Bay.

The Samaritan FMR Newport Rural Training Program was started in 2022 due to the need to train more physicians to practice on the Oregon Coast and surrounding areas or similar rural or underserved locations across the country. We are affiliated with the Core Samaritan Family Medicine Residency Program in Corvallis, Oregon. Our program is located within Pacific Communities Hospital, a newly updated and community-owned critical access hospital. As the only residency program in the hospital, the residency has a unique opportunity to immerse the residents in continuity of care opportunities across populations and specialties.
The Family Medicine Residency Program reviews applicants in the NRMP match. We start reviewing applicants when ERAS opens, so applying early is recommended. Below is our minimum requirements for review.
We look favorably upon applicants who have a shared vision of the importance of rural family medicine training and of caring for the underserved in Oregon. We are looking for applicants who have demonstrated resilience, flexibility, and self-motivation in their training since these attributes are required for rural family medicine training and practice.
