Mission & Objectives

The mission of the OHSU Family Medicine Residency Program is to develop family physicians and foster leaders and stewards of health care.

Program AIMS:

  • To broadly train family medicine residents to enter comprehensive full-scope family medicine practices.
  • To prepare graduates to become leaders in family medicine and approach their medical practice with academic rigor.
  • To prepare residents within an innovative curriculum that emphasizes continuity of care across settings, population health, health equity and advocacy for patients.
  • To be a leader in family medicine training by producing leaders within an innovative four-year curriculum and capstone program.

Program History

The OHSU Family Medicine Residency Program in Portland, Oregon, is one of the oldest residencies in family medicine and was the first in the state. Accredited in 1971, the program has a long history of residency education, rural engagement and innovation in training residents. In 2012, the residency became a leading member of the length of training pilot, which is a collaborative between the ACGME and the American Board of Family Medicine to study the optimal length of training in Family Medicine.

Program Highlights

The novel 4 year curriculum has a significant focus on scope of practice in Family Medicine, population health, quality improvement and advocacy and leadership. Over the course of 4 years, residents are trained to be health care leaders with educational experiences that are focused in multiple hospitals systems, two community, two rural, and five continuity Family Medicine Clinics, including one FQHC.

With Family Medicine Faculty that provide the full scope of care, residents are immersed in a rich training environment that spans from a University setting to the rural frontier, and involves integration to community settings as well as a vertically integrated health system. Family Medicine Physicians train Residents to care for patients at every transition of care, including obstetric and in and outpatient settings. Alongside faculty members, residents work as partners in robust Patient Center Primary Care Homes (PCPCH) to provide all care for all patients including gender affirming care, family planning, chronic disease management, and family planning options. The OHSU Family Medicine Clinics were early adopters of Medication Assisted Treatment and among the first to address substance use in pregnant patients. During their time in training, all Portland residents are required to have training in MAT.
