Mission & Objectives

At Providence Oregon Hospital Family Medicine Residency, we promote lifelong learning of the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to provide high-quality care, especially to those most in need. Our mission is to train family physicians to be the cornerstone of patient-centered, socially responsible, community-oriented medical care.

As physicians of the Providence Oregon Family Medicine Residency Program, we treat common illnesses uncommonly well. We honor patients’ unique needs and cultures. We strive to balance our professional and personal lives.

Program History

Our history is the residency opened in 2001 and the first class graduated in 2004. We have trained and graduated 112 Family Medicine Physicians or a quarter of all Family Physicians trained in Oregon, in that time frame.

As physicians of the Providence Oregon Family Medicine Residency Program, we treat common illnesses uncommonly well. We honor patients’ unique needs and cultures. We Offer

Rotations by Year

Year One

Your intern year will start with a 2-week introduction to internship. The rest of the year is divided into eight 6-week blocks. All the interns return together after the first two blocks for a community medicine week followed by vacation.
In total, we have 3 week-long vacations plus 5 flexible vacation days throughout the year. Every 6-week block includes clinic. OB and FM blocks have two full days of clinic most weeks. OB experiences will be divided among two 6-week blocks allowing for continuity and depth of experience on L&D. Didactics Tuesday and Thursday between 7:00 – 7:45 am and Wednesday afternoons from 12:30 – 5:00 pm.

Year Two

During your second year, your learning will be longitudinal and divided in quartiles. Your time will be spent in the following areas: Family Medicine Inpatient; Obstetrics and Perinatology; Gynecology; Geriatrics; Sports Medicine; Behavioral Health; Procedure Clinics; Emergency Medicine; Rural Rotation in Seaside, OR; Cardiology; and Electives. You will also complete a Substance Use Disorder program (it Matters). Your average time in Continuity Clinic will be about 2 to 3 days per week. In total, we have 3 week-long vacations plus 5 flexible vacation days throughout the year. No 24-hour call is required during your second year.

Year Three

Year Three will also be longitudinal divided in quartiles. During this final year of your residency, you will focus on: Family Medicine Inpatient; Obstetrics (OB Focus only); High Risk Obstetrics (OB Focus only); Pediatric Outpatient; Pediatric Emergency Medicine; Sports Medicine; Geriatrics; Gynecology; Behavioral Health; Dermatology, and Electives. You will continue studies in Substance Use Disorder (it Matters). Your average time in Continuity Clinic will be about 2 to 3 days per week. In total, we have 3 week-long vacations plus 5 flexible vacation days throughout the year. No 24-hour call is required.

All applications should be made through ERAS only and are accepted through November 1st. We welcome qualified graduates from both allopathic and osteopathic programs. Providence Oregon Family Medicine Residency participates in the National Resident Matching Program.

Medical Students

Providence Oregon Family Medicine offers a four-week sub-internship in family medicine for fourth-year medical students.
